Three weeks in and September continues to shine on the judoka of South Brent Judo Club.

The month began with a bang when Lewis Widdicombe, of Ivybridge Community College, became the first from the club to represent England at the UK School Games in Loughborough.

The multi-sport event brought together the cream of the home nations’ sporting youth. Spurred on by his family at mat side and his club friends who watched via the internet, Lewis fought in the under 81kg division and did the club proud, winning three of his four fights and taking a well-deserved bronze.

Lewis’ success in the East Midlands was quickly followed by club success in the West Midlands. Ten judoka competed at the Heart of England Championships in Walsall.

In the precadet category Adam Vosper (U46kg) and Josh Shipp (U42kg) fought brilliantly to win gold while Cordelia Gregory (U73kg) showed skill and stamina to earn a silver medal.

In the cadets Cerys Callard (U40kg) also won gold while Lewis Widdicombe proved that he could mix it at all levels by winning all his fights to take eold in a group packed with England players.

Libby Daymond (U73kg) showed her strength in depth to earn a well-deserved bronze while Koyla Schwinge (U66kg) and Max Gregory (U81kg) both fought hard to bring home bronze.

The competition was topped off by Brent’s very own black belt junior Tom Ingram, who made the final and took silver.

Cadets Tom Smith (U50kg) and Davy Grey (U55kg), also from ICC, fought well and just finished outside the medals.

A large contingent of South Brent Judo Club players will next be in action in the Netherlands in October, where they will compete in two highly competitive European players.
