Modbury Rovers U16s 8,

Sporting Lipson U16s 2

The quarter-finals of the division cup saw Modbury set up to attack.

Just a few minutes in Jack Eades burst through the Lipson defence and fired home the opener with his unfavoured right foot.

Lipson tried to retaliate but the Modbury back three of Holt, Cheriton and Bodmin were standing strong.

Eade got his second with a superb chip before Brace latched on to an Olly Fountain through ball to hit his first of the day.

The midfield pair of Petitt and Fountain were excellent. With Toby Berry and Miles Hurt running the wings were unplayable.

The next attack saw Eades round a defender and square into the box for Zach Joseph to tap in between the ‘keeper’s legs.

Lipson were getting frustrated and a few rash challenges came flying in, one which missed Bodmin and left him free to burst up the left side and cross into the box for Eades to complete his hat-trick.

The first half still had time for more as a bit of fancy footwork from Fountain found Brace on the edge of the area.

He instinctly hit a thunderbolt across goal and into the far corner so Rovers could go in six up at the break.

Manager Lee Janes made a few substitutions at half time and changed formation.

The introduction of Theo Cox in to midfield and a flat back four with Edgecombe and Weeks joining Holt and Bodman.

Lipson got a quick goal but Modbury were soon back in control, Brace hitting his hat-trick effort. All-out attack eventually saw Eades hammer home his fourth and Modbury’s eighth, before Lipson nicked a second goal at the death.

U15 Girls Devon Cup

Kingsbridge 30,

Sidmouth/Exmouth 27

Kings continued their unbeaten run last Sunday with a thrilling win against a strong combined Sidmouth and Exmouth side.

Maddy Robinson opened the Kings account with a great solo run to score in the corner. Ferocious tackling by Abbi Jarvis, Mila Lynch and Bracken Rawlins stunned the opposition and kept Kings in control of any breakdown.

Annie Jones quickly scored another try, followed by a huge drive from Harriet Haddy to set up a try by Mila Lynch.

Sidmouth began to find their rhythm and pinched two tries back before the first drinks break.

The second period saw Sidmouth score another quick try before a great resurgence by Kings. Beth Falla cut a swathe through the centre to free Maddy Robinson, who scored a superb try.

Then Sidmouth fought back to score two tries and a conversion to put them in a commanding lead at 27-20.

The final period was a real rollercoaster of a ride for spectators as time and time again the Kings’ girls came close to scoring.

Finally, Sophie Seal made a brilliant run through the middle only to be tackled just before the try line.

Annie Jones was there to pick up the loose ball and drive over to score.

An agonising few minutes had spectators screaming in the stands until with the last play Beth Falla scored in the corner to complete a nail-biting win.

Well done to all the girls for an outstanding performance!

Kingsbridge U14s 10,

Topsham U14s 29

On a dry and firm High House pitch, Kings started really well with some slick passing from the kick off; Marcel Purchase found space on the outside and ran half the length of the pitch to be held up close to the Topsham try line.

From the ensuing scrum, although Kings were going backwards, Will Hollis managed to get the ball to Tom Newman, who eluded several Topsham players with some great stepping to score the opening try.

Topsham were jolted into action and Kings lost focus to allow Topsham to build their phases with some committed and well-organised work at the breakdown, which provided them with plenty of front-foot ball.

What pressure Kings were able to put them under was well-marshalled by some intelligent and effective kicking behind the Kings’ backs.

Kings’ forwards were full of energy, with some very good tackling from Archie Walwyn and the Kings loose forwards, but they were not working as a unit and allowed the Topsham forwards to dictate terms and give their backs the space to run in three tries before half time.

The effort of the Kings players cannot be faulted, with some great tackling, but they found themselves under constant pressure from a very well-drilled Topsham team who scored a further two tries.

Kings finally responded and the forwards started to compete, gradually nullifying Topsham’s ascendancy.

They made it all look very simple, with quick recycled ball which was passed through the backs to Tom Newman, who needed no invitation with space and an overlap, to score with ease.

The spectators were left to wonder what could have been.

Kingsbridge U13s 48,

Topsham U13s 7

Following a disappointing performance against Cullompton, Kingsbridge were keen to make amends against the visitors from Topsham.

With the Kingsbridge coaches working hard to improve on tackling and possession from the breakdown Kings were fired up for this match.

From the kick off Kingsbridge forwards took control of the game and excellent work by Troy, David, Finn, Henry, Bertie and Tom allowed Kingsbridge a better platform to control the game.

With Tom Haddy returning from injury, he made a significant impact not only in the scrum but also with some powerful running, drawing Topsham players into the tackle to allow greater time on the ball for the backs.

With the forwards working cohesively, the stalemate was broken with a forwards score, Troy driving over for the opening try.

With the Kingsbridge pack controlling the game, some quick ball from Indi at scrum-half allowed a penetrating run from Ted Slade for a try under the posts.

However, it was not to be all Kingsbridge and Topsham fought back and a quick break allowed them to score.

Kings responded immediately when a powerful run by Ben extended the lead going into the break.

Following the break Kings took control with some crunching tackles from Alex, Bertie, and Ted.

The Kingsbridge pressure was relentless, allowing further tries for Flynn, Henry,Tom, Alex, Harry and Ru. The try of the match came when Harry Burner showed an impressive burst of speed to run the length of the pitch, leaving everyone in his wake.

This was a much better team performance from Kingsbridge, the ideal response to last week’s defeat.

KM United U13s 6,

Torquay Academy 1

Building on a strong performance from last week, KM came out worthy winners against Torquay Academy in the cup.

On a blustery Malborough morning, the damage was all done in a first half that saw seven goals. Torquay would have opened their account early but for a fine save from ‘keeper Richie.

KM struck first with an incisive break from player-of-the-match Sam, who tucked it neatly through the ‘keeper’s legs.

In midfield, Fraser, Billy, Oscar and Tom M took control, giving Tom H the opportunity to finish expertly.

With the momentum swinging their way, KM added another with Sam scoring an almost identical breakaway goal to his first and, from a goal kick, Tom M splitting the defence and showing excellent close control to finish emphatically.

Shortly afterward Sam scored the pick of his hat-trick, latching on to a fine through ball.

In defence Louis led the charge with Oliver, Harry and Dan disrupting the visitors’ attack.

However, sustained pressure saw first Richie make another expert save and finally Torquay find the back of the net.

KM responded with another swift passing move, allowing Oscar to carve open the defence and add a well-deserved sixth.

With Euan and Lewis in defence, Kieran making a welcome return and James making his first appearance, KM continued to create well, with Oscar and Fraser both coming close in the second half.

Although failing to add to their tally, KM closed the game out effectively and go through to the next round.

Kingsbridge U12s 15,

Topsham U12s 10

Topsham had a huge squad but Kingsbridge, with half as many players, arrived ready for the challenge.

Kings won the toss and kicked off, with the game starting hard and fast. The first scrum went to Kingsbridge close to the Topsham try line, but Topsham won the ball and raced up the pitch, where they encountered some massive tackles from Daisy, Louis and Callum.

Callum ripped the ball and the Kings charged towards the Topsham line.

Topsham put up a good defence but Louis managed to drive through for the opening try to make it 5-0 to the Kings.

In the second quarter Topsham had a fresh side and both teams were evenly matched, but the second try was scored by Topsham 5-5.

The Kings didn’t lose their cool and the tackles were fearless and the rucking was faultless. Toby came on for his first game for the Kings and put in some hard work and big tackles; Daisy, Izzzy, Alex and Josh also worked relentlessly, resulting in a try for Daisy and a score of 10-5.

In the final quarter both teams were tiring from a hard-fought game, but the young Kings maintained their determination and after some fluent passing Lenny went over for 15-5.

In the final minutes of the game Topsham pushed hard and managed to put a final try in, ending a well-fought match at 15-10 to Kingsbridge.

KM United U8s

KM United’s under eight squad had a very successful day at Kingsteignton Athletic YFC on Sunday.

Playing away from the comfort of home and minus goal-keeping twins Jack and George, the team started with a cracking third-minute goal from Billy.

This chance was converted from a superbly placed corner from George I.

Two minutes later a strike by Sam from five yards out saw KM two goals up and the boys settled into some lovely flowing football.

The game hovered mainly in the opposition’s half with defending from Harry, George L and Thomas.

Just before half time Louie shot through Kingsteignton defence from 18 yards.

The coaches Steve Inch and Vaughan Bowden were very pleased with the performance thus far. On the verge of the whistle KM thought they were 4-0 up, but George I’s goal was disallowed.

Resuming the game Billy broke through and lobbed the ‘keeper for 4-0. Ten minutes in and a precise pass from Louis to George I saw him get his first goal for 5-0. The final goal of the day came from exceptional team work and hard tackling from Ethan and George.

George L eventually passed back to Billy, who had been waiting for his chance to pounce and KM were 6-0 winners.

Coaches wanted to make a special mention of goalie Rian, who despite a lack of saves to make, took some very good goal kicks.

This week sees the under eights having a rest week and they will return for a home match against Watcombe Wanderers.
