Harbour House is excited to announce a series of free events for the community to celebrate Dancer, Jai Chauhan's first solo exhibition in the South West. These events are free, open to all, and will explore the dynamic themes of dance and self-expression reflected in Chuhan’s paintings.

Jai Chuhan, a London-based artist originally from India, is known for her distinctive use of paint and colour in works often featuring the female form within intimate, room-like settings. Dancer showcases a selection of new and existing paintings that explore dance as a medium for creative autonomy. Chuhan has long collaborated with dancers - ranging from traditional Indian performers to pole dancers- and her work reflects how dance enables personal expression and empowerment.

At the heart of the artistic programme at Harbour House is an exploration of the intersection between movement and art, making this exhibition the perfect opportunity for visitors to engage with a range of performances and workshops inspired by Chuhan’s work. The series of free events includes:

  • May 10: Artist in conversation with Jai Chuhan, Tate Britain Assistant Curator Hannah Marsh and Harbour House Director Amy Dickson

Harbour House will host an intimate Artist in Conversation event featuring Jai Chuhan and Tate Britain Assistant Curator Hannah Marsh, chaired by Amy Dickson, Director of Harbour House. This is a rare opportunity to hear Chuhan discuss her work and the themes explored in Dancer. The event will be both in-person and online. Limited in-person tickets are available via Eventbrite.   • July 19: Kathak Dance workshops led by Sonia Sabri Company for various age groups at Quay Lane Studio

Sonia Sabri Company, one of the UK’s leading contemporary South Asian dance and music companies, will lead these lively and accessible Kathak dance workshops. Suitable for all skill levels, the workshops will introduce participants to Kathak, a classical dance form originating from Northern India.

10am - 11am: For children under 7 & their grown-ups: A family-friendly session where parents/carers are encouraged to join in or observe.

11:30am - 12:30pm: For children and young people aged 8+: A drop-off session, allowing parents/carers to leave participants to join the workshop on their own.

In celebration of Dancer and as part of Kingsbridge Fair Week, Harbour House are delighted to present a performance of Mughal Miniatures: The Awakening by Sonia Sabri Company. This vibrant outdoor performance will transport audiences to the opulent world of the Mughal Empire through a fusion of traditional Indian and Persian miniature art and contemporary dance.

Join Harbour House at the bandstand for an unforgettable performance as performers in sumptuous costumes bring miniature paintings to life, with a surprising twist that invites characters to break free from their rigid frames and explore their true identities.
