A POEM written by a student at Malborough Primary School student brings the horror of war to life.

Lewis Perkins wrote the poem while in Year 6, last year, when he was 11. The poem, called ’World War’ was a result of studying the First World War in school. He said he watched a play and that, along with seeing modern wars on the TV, inspired the poem.

‘I’m proud of it’, said Lewis.

World War by Lewis Perkins

Nobody knew what man had done,

‘Til the trigger was pulled on an old fashioned gun,

It’s amazing how much hatred people can give,

It can cause a whole country not to live.

Throughout the battlefield,

People were fighting for glory, god and fame,

But nobody realised the true and real pain.

Bullets flew through the air,

Piercing man’s heart with a tear.

Whilst loved ones were sitting at home all alone,

When all that was left on the battlefield was skin and bone.

All there was, was revenge,

Round every bloody bend.

All you could see on the battlefield,

Was bodies, barbed wire and fence,

And in the soldiers’ souls everything was tense.

You could see the soldiers’ fear,

As bullets whizzed past his ear.

He said: ‘Please God if thou can hear,

‘Tell my kids I’ll return in the coming years.

‘Then tell my wife,

‘She is the thing I love most in my life’.

Whilst women were working their hearts out,

All men did was scream and shout.

Wives were sending them food and a letter,

When the commanders didn’t know any better.

Some people were dying, others were trying,

And even a few people were lying.

The army was strong,

But not strong enough,

To tackle the opposition’s obstacle course.

Some people survived, but most people died,

Some people think its good,

And others think its bad,

But now it’s all over, so I’m just glad.
