The West Alvington Horticultural Society held its 17th spring show last Saturday.

The show was held in the village hall, with beautiful arrays of colourful daffodils, camellias, floral art, handicrafts, photography and creative junior exhibits.

Secretary and treasurer Keith Steer explained that entries had risen significantly by 86 across the 45 classes.

“Our flower judge, Jim Collins stated that the entries were of a very high standard ,” he said.

“With some magnificent Tahiti double daffodils exhibited by John Lee, a superb bowl of nine mixed daffodils exhibited by Terry Reeves and a spectacular mixed bowl of spring flowers exhibited by June Steer, the like of which he had not seen before, and winning her the blue ribbon for best exhibit in the show,” Mr Steer added.

The champion for the day was John Lee winning the most points in the show and the most points in the section for other spring flowers. Terry Reeves won the daffodil cup and the Bowringleigh Trophy for shrubs and camellias was won by Shirley Chapman and Cynthia Morgan. Cynthia also went on to share the floral art cup with new exhibitor Christine Collins from Loddiswell.

The handicrafts section was won by Diane Tucker and Joe Brownlie will require the silver polish in the photography section. The society was delighted by the number of entries exhibited by West Avington Primary School children with their gardens on a plate. Sisters Maisie and Millie triumphed in this section. The judges for the day were Jim and Joyce Collins, Jackie Case, Janet Wingate, Jeremy Willcocks, Pat Brooks and Harriet Brownlie.

The event was a very good social occasion also raising nearly £800 in two hours. The show 2017 President Terry Reeves presented the trophies and brought the day to its conclusion.
