Over 120 red-dress-clad people showed up to run in celebration and memoriam for a fellow runner earlier last week.
The South Hams Hash House Harriers (SH4) donned red dresses to participate in a run in celebration of Rod ‘Goolie’ Street’s 70th birthday on Tuesday, May 2.
Not only was the event held to celebrate his birthday, but to raise money for the Fishermen’s Mission in memory of Rod’s son, Matthew, who tragically died ten years ago.
The run started and ended at Bigbury Memorial Hall, where runners could choose between a one-and-a-half mile walk, a three-and-a-half mile walk, or a five mile run. With £5 per entry, runners were provided with a post-run meal. It was an additional £2 per drink ‘from water to wine’, with the promotional poster stating, “the more you drink, the more money is raised!”
Rod and the Hashers want to give thanks to the local companies who supplied the refreshments. The meat for the lamb roast dinner was supplied by Coombe Farm, and the veggie curry was supplied by Tracey and Conner from the Journey’s End Inn Ringmore. The Lazy Cow in Modbury supplied the birthday cake, and Teignworthy Brewery in Newton Abbot supplied the beer.
After a successful evening, the Hashers reached their goal of £2000 for the Fishermen’s Mission.
The SH4 run every Wednesday at 7.30pm rain or shine, daylight or pitch black, every week of the year. They describe themselves as a “very social running group”, saying that the “often quoted description of Hashes as ‘Clubs for drinkers with a running problem’ certainly applies to us.”
