Kingsbridge Estuary Rotary Club has raised thousands for the Chestnut Appeal with their Race Night, which was originally postponed due to ‘snowmaggedon’.

Originally planned for February 28, the Race Night finally went ahead on March 21 at the Creeks End Inn, and raised £2,200.

David Horne joined KERC last year and was given the responsibility of organising the Race Night for The Chestnut Appeal, a charity that provides funds for prostate cancer research.

80 people attended, with races shown on two large screens. David thanked manager Terry Harvey and his “excellent staff” for their “hospitality and efficiency”.

The night involved nine races with eight horses in each race. Each race was sponsored by a local business, and a total of 64 horses were sold at £10 per horse. People whose maths skills are better than mine will realise that doesn’t add up, because the last race was a St Austell selling stakes - which was sold on the night.

The evening finished with a final race, for which horses were auctioned, with the winning owner receiving a prize of £100.?The best horse name has to go to ‘Carpet Burn from Shag Pile out of Moyseys’.

David said: “Special thanks to MC Phil Gunnell, auctioneer Rob Cattell, tote operators Mike Jones and Elaine Court, and super saleswoman Elizabeth Bewley-Jones. In addition to being a thoroughly enjoyable evening, the event raised a total of £2,200 for the Chestnut Appeal.”
