As part of their term topic, What a Load of Rubbish, a preschool recently held its own beach clean.

Pupils from Aveton Gifford Preschool visited South Milton sands to do their bit for the environment last Wednesday.

Braving the strong, cold wind, the children purposefully searched for any plastic or waste that might harm the birds and sea creatures.

They collected a sack full of rubbish consisting of broken plastic bottles, plastic pieces and various debris from fishing wire and broken lobster pots.

The pupils were inspired by a Plastic Pirates workshop put on by Recycle Devon where they gained an understanding of the harm these items can cause to marine wildlife.

They learnt the phrase, “Plastic is not fantastic - save our seas!”

Other learning activities have included reducing packed lunch waste, sorting waste into recycling bins, composting, and conserving clean water and electricity.

They have learned they can reduce their carbon footprint by upcycling old things into something new, such as turning old socks into sock puppets and making plastic cartons into bird feeders.
