A COUPLE who took their dog for walk at Bantham were horrified to discover a substantial pile of litter last weekend.

On bank holiday Monday, Gerry and Diana Allen were walking their dog Boris across Bantham Ham - the peninsula that divides the River Avon from Bigbury Bay - when they found the pile of rubbish at the top of the steps to the river beach.

Gerry Allen said: ‘We were treated to two disposable barbecues, paper plates, drink bottles, cans, food containers and the remains of a beach feast.

‘Whether it was holidaymakers or locals, it matters not, but whoever you are please do not come back!

‘When on walks, we do pick up the odd plastic bottle or discarded wrapper, but on this occasion I would have needed a large black bin bag.

‘We live in such a beautiful area, it is a shame that a few irresponsible people can spoil it for the majority.’

Mr Allen added: ‘The rubbish had clearly been used on the beach, so perhaps they carried the litter up the steps hoping to find a bin, before dumping it on the grass.

‘They couldn’t have been more than 200-300 yards from a bin, so there really is no excuse.’
