AN event has been organised by a Kingsbridge mum to support the town's threatened children's centre.
Last Friday saw a bring and buy sale held at the centre, next to the primary school on Belle Cross Road. Parents brought along their unwanted clothes and toys, shopped for new ones, and enjoyed a raffle and refreshments.
The event raised around £300 and showed that local parents care about the centre's future.
Megan Busby played a key role in organising the day.
She says that she uses the centre two or three times a week, and would miss it if it closed.
Her partner Chris added that travelling to Totnes to access the service would be 'a bit of a trek' for people from Kingsbridge.
Devon County Council is proposing to close the centre, and move to a 'different model' of delivering children's services.
This would see a 'hub' in Totnes, with linked sites at South Brent and Dartmouth.
The current, purpose built centre may be transferred to other 'early childhood' services like preschools or health.
Devon County Council says the community in Kingsbridge will be consulted further about this.
Megan said: 'They've already taken away some good classes – that happened a couple of months ago.
There are loads of us that use it. There are 30 people that come just for Bumps and Babes, and the classes go up to five years old.
'It's really good to get a bit of respite and talk to each other.'
Megan said that parents are working with the management of the children's centre to raise funds and awareness, and show DCC how many people use it.
Other events will be organised in the future, including bag packing at Morrisons in Kingsbridge, and a 'teddy bears picnic' once the weather has warmed up.
