Ray Wakelin’s letter, January 26, where he claims that the country’s future was decided by only 2.7 per cent of the population, is a classic example of the old adage about lies, damned lies and statistics.

The Brexit referendum was a single issue vote, so actually it would be much more reasonable to say that the country’s future was decided by a full 100 per cent of those who were concerned enough to vote. And the majority opted to leave. That’s democracy, Mr Wakelin!

Likewise with your call for proportional representation: on a non party single issue vote it is entirely irrelevant and would have made no difference at all to the outcome. As for the Australian model you advocate, its demand that everyone vote is a denial of the very freedom on which democracy rests.

We need sound argument and not hot air if we are to transition safely into the better future that awaits us, if we’ll respond to the One who loves us and knows what is best for our lives.
