GALMPTON residents took it upon themselves to organise a garden party to celebrate the birthday of the Queen on Saturday, June 4.
Inspired by Veronica Barford, eight friends decided that Galmpton should have its own village celebrations.
In glorious sunshine, about eighty villagers came with picnics, drinks, chairs, tables and rugs.
They settled on the lawns of two adjoining gardens decorated with Naval bunting.
A marquee, kindly lent by Bruce and Julia Williams, hosted a children’s corner with activities and a table for cupcakes baked by Jeanne Stevens.
Music was performed by Eric Stevens on his keyboard, and Phil Worth from Hope Cove led country dancing later on.
Other activities included croquet organised by Lindsey Fletcher, a royal quiz with questions set by Cherry Patterson - narrowly won by David and Maz Morris.
The children drew pictures of the Queen, and five-year-old Millie won first prize.
A larger-than-life-size model of the Queen sat serenely overlooking the scene, lent by Michael and Jacqui Reid.
A loyal toast to Her Majesty the Queen was proposed by Bruce Williams, and everyone stood and responded by heartily singing the National Anthem.
Veronica described it as ‘a bucolic scene, drawing together the villagers in a warm community spirit.’
