RACES, games and sun was the winning combination on Sunday for the South Milton Fun Day.

Whether you wanted to relax in the sun with a bottle of beer, munch on a burger or hot dog or take part in the games, you could do it all at the event held on Sunday, August 7.

Held in Manor Cottage field courtesy of Mary and Graham Jinks, the South Milton Fun Day saw adults and children take part in running races, tug of war, welly-wanging, rounders and cricket matches.

Started as a village cricket match to mark the Queen’s Jubilee, the fun day has grown into an annual event now in its fourth year after it was rained off last year. The cricket match is still the main focus of the day, with the stream in the village marking the boundary between the North and the South teams, this year the North team, captained by Kenny Luscombe, claimed the trophy back after two wins by the South team, bringing them level at 2-2.

The event, which raised £274 for the village hall, is for everyone in the village and anyone staying in the village at the time to come and have a fun afternoon.

The day is kicked off with single-wicket cricket and a rounders match before the races and games, and then culminates in the North vs South cricket match.

The usual ‘champagne moment’ was a ‘prosecco moment’, where bottles of prosecco were given to the most outstanding players. Tommy Booker, who attends KCC and was made to promise that the prosecco would be passed on to his parents, took home the prize in the cricket for an impressive catch, narrowly beating Davy Savage who ended up flat on his back as he snatched the ball from the air.

The rounders prize was shared between Marion Luscombe and Tony Burn who had an ‘almighty pile up’ while both running with eyes on the ball.

The James Penwill Cup, named after a generous benefactor to the village hall, is presented to the youngster who stood out in the games and this year it was won by William Bate.

Graham Collyer, who organises the event alongside Nick Townsend and the VIllage Hall Committee, said: ‘Everyone really enjoyed themselves, the barbecue and the bar were a great success and the weather, which started off as thick sea fog, lifted to give an amazing afternoon of sun. Bring on next year!’Graham and Mary Jinks added: 'It's always a pleasure to host the games as its a great opportunity to catch up with all of our wonderful friends from the village, new and old. This year drew a huge crowd and was so much fun. 'Thank you to all involved for making the day such a success.'
