The 38th Frogmore Regatta brought people of all ages out to play on and near the river on Sunday.
Despite a misty start and changeable weather throughout, more than 2,200 people came through the gates of the regatta, meaning the car parking had to be extended twice, to join in the fun, family entertainment both on and off the water.
Unlike last year, where wet and windy weather stopped much of the play, this time all the headline events and water sports went ahead as planned in an action packed programme, including rowing, raft and mud races, paddleboarding, children’s sports, Morris dancing, Zumba display, ‘Banned from the Moor’ ceilidh music, ‘Uke-N-Sing’ ukulele band, classic cars, dog show, swing boats and donkey rides.
This year, one of the main attractions was a visit from the Astro to Atlantic team with their 23ft boat. Their stall added to the nautical theme, attracting much interest, as did their ergo machine 200m sprint challenge, which saw friends and siblings competing, for the fastest row.
The South Moor Vets sponsored dog show drew its usual high level of competition, with some classes numbering in excess of 30 dogs, a tough call on judge Barbara Hall.
Regatta chairman Paul Harding said: “What a successful regatta we had, after all the planning and hard work of villagers, friends, neighbours and supporters. It was another great day out in the South Hams, with something to entertain and occupy everyone.
“Two new attractions this year, the craft tent and produce show, both featuring local people demonstrating their talents, proved a great success.
“A good turnout of local businesses for catering, crafts, entertainment, alongside local charitable and not for profit organisations, added greatly to the occasion.
“An amazing band of helpers gave their time to set up, clear up and help on the day. And it was good to see some of our village newcomers participating throughout the event. Without this help and support, the regatta could not take place, so our thanks go out to one and all.”
Jon Doyle, operations director at Coast and Country Cottages, long-time regatta sponsor, said: “As a locally based agency with around 400 holiday properties exclusively in the South Hams, our team are actively involved in supporting many regional events throughout the year, and Frogmore Regatta is one of the highlights!
“Coast and Country Cottages was delighted to sponsor Frogmore Regatta again this year and the beautiful setting alongside Frogmore Creek, the activities, competitions and stalls for all the family made this, once again, a very enjoyable event.
‘We would like to thank all those who work hard to make Frogmore Regatta such a success every year.”
The regatta is organised by Frogmore Village Community Association, and is its main fund raising event of the year. Funds support maintenance of the village hall and village field, and enable community events, particularly for the older and younger members of the village.
