ST Edmunds church in Kingsbridge are asking schools, clubs, charities, work places and churches around Kingsbridge to ‘Flag It Up’.

‘Flag-it-up’ is the initiative of St Edmund’s to take a snapshot of what inspires all generations of the Kingsbridge community. Throughout August, St Edmund’s church have been busy making lengths of bunting with hundreds of colourful flag triangles ready to be written or drawn on with a message to share.

Susanne from St Edmund’s said: ‘Whatever our age, we all have words to share. They might be inspirational, joyful or comforting, perhaps a favourite poem, or aspirations for the future. The main thing is not to get to hung-up on what to say and not say anything.

‘If words are not your thing, how about drawing a picture on your flag triangle? There is no need to sign your triangle unless that is your desire!’

Bunting strings of flag triangles are already available at Age Concern, Tourist Information Centre, Wordwise and St Edmund’s Church. So far messages already penned include famous quotes, verses from poems, songs and the bible to birthday wishes and congratulations to friends.

By inviting our community and visitors for a small donation of £1 to write or draw a message on a flag triangle the money raised will be equally shared between Kingsbridge in Bloom, Tearfund’s Toilet Twinning, and St Edmund’s lighting project, details at the end.

Susanne said: ‘We would love our whole community to get involved. Our school pupils of all ages have thousands of hopes for the future, our clubs are vibrant and full of fun and inclusion and could reach out with their messages to so many others, and our amazing charities have so many words of comfort to share.

‘We do hope that this unique community activity will inspire you to get involved.’

At the end of October, all the bunting will be collected and displayed in St Edmund’s church so that locals and visitors will be able to come in and enjoy reading all of the shared messages.

Then, on Friday, October 28, at 6pm, St Edmund’s will be hosting an evening party in the church for all to come and celebrate this great way in which our community and visitors have come together during the past three months.

So if you are interested please contact either Judy on 07435 567126 or Susanne on 07540 497079 who would love to hear from you, and they will provide you with one of the many colourful bunting strings.
