Thurlestone Primary School are launching their own newspaper, written by the pupils, with the first edition expected around May or June.
The name of this All Saints Primary School newspaper hasn’t been decided on yet, with many names being offered up by the kids, who will get a vote on the final name soon.
The pupils have been thinking about what kind of stories they would like to write for the newspaper, with things such as ‘The Best Places in the South Hams to get a Milkshake’, film and book reviews, sports reports, jokes, cartoons, word searches and a ‘Day in the Life’ of teachers, all being suggested so far.
Seventy children, basically half of the school, are involved in the project, and all the pupils, from reception to Year 6, will have the chance to be involved, with the Year 6 pupils acting as sub-editors, giving them the opportunity to practise their spelling, grammar and punctuation skills they have been learning in class.
King Print have offered to print the newspaper for free, and the start up costs are being met by the FTS - Friends of Thurlestone School - such as press passes for all the children so they feel like their job within the paper is real.
Lynsey Sizer, All Saints Primary School, Thurlestone, said: “We will publish three issues a year, with content solely written by the children. It is magical to see their creative juices flowing and everyone working as a team.
“We can’t wait to see the first issue in print! We’ll be selling it for 50p, with all proceeds going back to the FTS. We’re also advertising spots for local businesses so if anyone is interested, please contact the school directly on 01548 560494 and ask to speak to the Newspaper team.”
The new name should be decided by March 30, so keep your eyes out for more updates.
