Kingsbridge Primary School’s PTFA have handed over a cheque for nearly £12,000 to the head teacher.
Gareth Howells, head teacher, received a cheque for £11,828 from members of the PTFA on Friday, saying that the money would be used for creating a new running track for the pupils, and improvements to the entrance to the school.
He said: “Half of this money, combined with Sports Premium Funding, will go towards creating a brand new running track for the pupils.
This will help us to complete the Daily Mile challenge, where pupils are encouraged to run or walk a mile a day, which has proved to increase fitness and educational standards.
“The rest of the money will be used to improve the entrance to the school and make the site more secure.”?
Richard Teague, sports coach at Kingsbridge Primary, called the running track a “great opportunity”. He said: “We can time the pupils at the beginning of the term, and then we can track their progress through the school year.
“Children will be able to see their fitness improving and will gain confidence in their athletic abilities.”
There was even talk of a running or athletics club being formed when the new track is up and running.
Jenna Bigwood, chair of the PTFA, said: “The PTFA are really proud to be supporting the school with both the running track and works being carried out to improve the access and security for children around school. The ‘Daily Mile’ challenge being introduced next term will be fantastic for all our children! All schools should do it!”
