I write regarding the letter from Ian Searle, from Christchurch, ‘Dogs reflection of their owners’, Gazette, August 18.
Who does he think he is? We who live in the South Hams and are responsible dog owners love the fact we are in a dog-friendlly environment.
l Dogs in bars and restaurants? They are better behaved than a lot of children who seem to think they are allowed to run riot.
l Multiple dogs? Why not? If people who are dog lovers – which Mr Searle obviously is not – can provide a good home for more than one dog, who is he to dictate how many?
l Dogs on beaches? It is a pleasure to see dogs jumping into the waves and generally enjoying the beach – they have as much right as you, Mr Searle.
l Dog poo? I do deplore the fact there are too many people who will not clean up after their pets – there is a noticeable increase in the holiday season.
But perhaps Mr Searle would like to vent his spleen on all the human debris strewn around, even where bins are provided; bottles and bags thrown into hedges and even thrown out of cars?
I am 81 years old and dogs have always enriched my life, as they do for many others, so it makes my head boil when an arrogant dog hater comes into our area and starts dictating his terms.
Toddle off for another 15 years, Mr Searle, we won’t miss you.
