This year marks 40 years since the South West Coast Path opened to the public, and a new campaign called ‘40 for 40’ is being launched to celebrate.
Celebrities, outdoor enthusiasts, walkers and runners alike are coming together to help raise £40,000 to support the South West’s 630 mile National Trail. The new campaign was launched this month by the South West Coast Path Association, the charity that helps look after the path, and is launching next week to celebrate the path’s ‘birthday’ on May 20.
The association is calling for individuals, groups and businesses to show their support by making a donation, doing a sponsored walk or run, or hosting a fundraiser event. Fundraisers have already started backing the campaign and pledging their support.
The money raised will be used to repair or replace vital infrastructure that makes the path accessible to everyone such as steps, way markers, stiles, gates and bridges. It will also support the charity’s community outreach work aimed at getting people more active in the outdoors.
Julia Bradbury, TV presenter, is best known for co-presenting the BBC One programme Countryfile, and has presented for many outdoorsy and environmental programmes such as Planet Earth Live, The Wonder of Britain, and Britain’s Best Walks.
Julia said: “Walking is Britain’s favourite form of exercise and exploring our wonderful coastline is a fab way to get fit. The South West Coast Path is a gem, the whole trail is so varied and diverse so whether you want to do the whole stretch, or admire a tiny bit of it, there really is something for everyone. I wish everyone the best of luck with their 40 for 40 challenge!”
Five-time Olympian runner Jo Pavey is also backing the campaign.
Jo said: “I’m backing the 40 for 40 campaign because I’m passionate about people being able to enjoy the great outdoors. Our coast path is so precious and should be maintained, protected and enhanced so that it can be enjoyed by everyone for many years to come.
My hope is that my own kids will always love the path and its surroundings just like I have, and that many people of all ages can continue to enjoy it.”
Donation are already being accepted to help the SWCP Association reach it’s first goal of £10,000, which will help replace 1,000 steps this summer.
The South West Coast Path Association have until October 31 to reach their ambitious target. To get involved in 40 for 40, or to make a donation to the campaign, please visit www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk.
