THE National Trust’s South Devon Volunteer Group cleared a medieval linhay - a stone barn - and an ancient mound known as the Giants Grave at East Soar Farm.

Clearing the ancient monuments of brambles and gorse was recommended by a recent archaeological survey funded by Natural England.

With this work, damage caused by roots that can pull apart the monuments has been avoided.

Despite thick mist and fog, the volunteer group carefully cleared the walls and mound of vegetation before burning the cuttings on a fire, providing welcome warmth at the end of a cold day.

Catherine Adair, one of the volunteers said: ‘I really enjoy my time volunteering with the National Trust as it is great to get out in the fresh air and beautiful countryside. I also learn new skills and meet new people.’
